My Rant

Just recently I spoke with one of my Cuban/Canadian customers who told me that there are many Free to Air receivers in Cuba and people there are using them to get programming and news from US or simply using them to get something different then their own Fidel Castro controlled media. He told me that they can go to jail for that as it is illegal there. Can you imagine that people in Cuba risk their freedom watching TV Land, Cartoon, FOX or CNN (Bush controlled media)? Fidel is building probably bigger jails so he can lock up those criminals watching TV with US propaganda who are fed up with watching TV with Cuban propaganda.
Aren’t you lucky that you live in Canada? You can watch CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News and all the Bush propaganda you can handle or even Canadian/Bush propaganda on CBC, CTV or Global. As long as you watching it on Canadian controlled media you are a perfectly OK Canadian, however as soon as you get this programming on anything other then Cable, BellexpressVu, Starchoice you are in grey waters, because your money is not going to the right pocket. If you are watching it God forbid on FTA or a modified satellite receiver you are in black waters and you are a criminal just like the Cubans. Don’t let them fool you. It has nothing to do with Canadian content. CNN, TLC, ABC, NBC or whatever channel , is the same on Starchoice as on DirecTv. It is about where your money goes and if you can be controlled. Are you really free if you are controlled? Are you really free if you are not allowed to choose your satellite signal provider? How does it really feel?
You may say, what’s the difference? same channels same programming. Well, may be there is a difference.
Here is more food for thought…..

In my opinion, it is very sad that satellite and cable companies have to use law enforcement to keep their scrambled channels safe from hackers. Why not use technology instead!?  Why are Dish Network and Bell unable to secure their signal like DirecTV did? Well and here is the food Maybe, they want to be available to places like Cuba and they don’t want to  run just in free open key, because you and I would get it for free too, so they encrypt it but make it easily hackable so Cubans can watch it but, for you and I they pass the laws forbidding us to do what they want Cubans to do. Well this just doesn’t work. Does it? How do you stop the hackers in North America from trying to watch porn for free?
Here is how. Here is my solution to the problem.
To stop piracy:
#1 make it secure ( like DirecTv )
#2 just take the porn channels out and they will loose their interest. LOLL
#3 lower the prices for the subscriptions
There may be one more reason why they allow their signal to be pirated. First, they are getting free advertising that they would never have gotten otherwise. People are getting free previews of all the channels on their systems and they don’t have to pay a cent or do anything. They (Dish/BEV) don’t carry the costs of advertising, sales, customer service, activations, installation and deal with all other problems with prospective customers. Others (testers) are taking care of all that for them. Then, when they realize that things get too much out of hand, they shut down pirated boxes and press legal charges against satellite and other companies involved, spreading fears among everybody. Then things cool down. Every time they conduct ECM (electronic countermeasure) they get large groups of new subscribers that already know everything about their programming and are ready to subscribe as they are fed up with constant shut downs and programming interruptions. They get customers who don’t want to pirate anything anymore. He/she wants to subscribe and get it over with. They know what they want and they are ready to buy. And what do they buy? They buy what they know. It is NOT a DIRECTV as it is not pirated and they don’t know it. It is Dish Network and Bell. So, does this whole piracy problem works for them? May be they even like this.
Since Bell was caught reselling previously hacked receivers which were collected through their repatriation (amnesty) programs back to satellite market and DirecTv was pushing expired cards back to hackers in the past, my conspiracy theory may make more sense then you may think.
If you think you have another theory feel free to comment. Your comments are welcome.
